Sandcastles and sand sculptures used to be child's play. Not anymore. Today, sand art is a fascinating art medium that may be brand new to those of us not fortunate enough to live near the shore. It involves taking something as elemental as sand and transforming it into an artistic—if temporary--creation. This is an art that requires patience and the ability to let go. It is about the artistic process, about being in the moment.
Though the art of sand sculpting has been around as long as sand itself, it's getting new attention. Sand Masters, a show on the Travel Channel, follows a group of four sand artists as they travel around the world making commissioned sand art. Projects have run the gamut from a light-saber wielding Darth Vadar to a 60-ton sculpture that shoots fire! It's an amazing look at what’s possible with a little sand and a lot of creativity.
Next time you head to the beach, consider packing your X-ACTO sand art carving products along with your book and sunscreen. You might find yourself working on something much more enthralling than your tan.
